People always say that marriage has turned into a joke for a lot of people and no one is capable of being faithful anymore. I started thinking though... I know that there are more opportunities for cheating now, with the internet and clubs and such. But I sometimes wonder if the cheating was just as common 100 years ago but society was so much different back then, so the chances of a woman finding out were slim (since men did their own thing and there was little to no communication) unless she actually walked in on him cheating. And also, women leaving a man for cheating was pretty much unheard of. I think it was one of those things that a lot of women just had to accept.

So, do you think marriage is any more of a joke these days than it has been from the beginning of time? Have things really gotten worse or does it just seem that way since women are more empowered now and technology is also better?

I feel people have made more of a mockery of marriage. I think cheating was more taboo back then and people took their vows more seriously. I think people start off on the wrong foot, marrying for the wrong reasons and there is less satisfaction in marriages nowadays (women HAVING to work AND raise the children AND keep the house AND maintain the looks of the girls they see in magazines and on TV, men feeling more pressure to make more money than ever to keep up with what he feels he should have in his life, etc.) I think people are more unhappy now than they used to be, and they seek out pleasure in ways they aren't supposed to. So I do think cheating is actually more common now.

I too think that cheating is more common now. I also agree with lux in saying that people start off on the wrong foot getting married for the wrong reasons.

I think that back in the day (100+ yrs ago) woman had less op. to cheat. They were at home taking care of the house and the kids, cooking, cleaning and what not. The men were out working. I think that now days cheating is an everyday op. with woman working and being around men other than their mate all day long.
