I am taking my final math class for my AA and I'm REALLY bad at math. I've had to withdraw from 2 math classes before (one was legitimately not my fault but I didn't try to fight it) so I HAVE to stay in this one, basically. They won't allow me to punk out again. So I was determined to "get it" this time. My class was for Tuesday evenings 6:30pm. I spent the hundred-something on my textbook and we had our first class.
I was horrified. The professor was a scattered MESS. She didn't have enough syllabi for the entire class, she spoke so fast and in circles that the students were all just looking at each other like "WTF?" She took OVER AN HOUR to separate us into groups for "group work" (in a math class that is meant to prepare you for the CLAST). She didn't really explain why she was doing this, handed out some papers, which she also did not have enough for the whole class.
Those of us who received a syllabus saw that in order to do our homework we would NEED to be able to use the internet for it because she uses a specific website. When there is a required web component, it's supposed to be mentioned on the school's site at registration, but this one wasn't. She said that anyone can access the internet anywhere - fine. Whatever. It wasn't going to be a problem for me anyway. But I was pissed because we weren't even going to use our books except for self-teaching, and to get this code out of it for the homework website.
What a friggin' nightmare it became after that. She was the WORST I've ever encountered. She wasn't finishing her sentences, was going too fast, wasn't using the board to show procedure, and used a Powerpoint presentation instead. When we would ask questions she'd cut us off halfway through and start answering what she THOUGHT we were asking, which was always wrong. Everyone was hating her. She didn't even come close to getting through Chapter 1 in the first night (which she had 3 hours to do). She wanted us to do a presentation of the Venn Diagram with our groups and we were to work on that. WTF?! Why was this important to do in a group and as a presentation?
She had everyone who had bought a used book or had no book put a check next to their names on the roster indicating that she would need to give them a code to get on the website for the homework. So on the 2nd night (a full week later) she announced that no one emailed her for the codes. OMG! :shock We were like, "You told us you were going to give them to us at the next class - which is this one." She said we must have misunderstood her. :insomnia I wonder why!
She had lost about 10 students after the first class and got maybe 2 new ones. So she spent the first 45 minutes of our 2nd class getting those 2 people into groups and attempting to answer questions about the project. She had no syllabi for the people she'd forgotten. She told them to go to the website and get it off there. So she goes to show them how to do that and finds - DOH! She uploaded the wrong syllabus for our class anyway. She did ANOTHER Powerpoint presentation instead of showing her work and didn't answer questions properly. We got to the point where no one asked any questions because she sucked.
I had missed the drop/add period by the time I went to the 2nd class so I felt like I had to just stick this out. I was going to rely on my group members (who are really cool people) and the book, and that was that.
So I went to the homework website to register (I already had a code) and the website MAKES me use Internet Explorer...mildly aggravating, but not a huge deal. Then I get to the homework and it says I HAVE to download their Wizard to see my homework. What the holy...!? So I go to download it, the site is legit anyway. When I go to download it it says that I HAVE to allow Active X to be installed for the Wizard. Oh hell no - now we have a problem. Active X is a deal-breaker. It's blocked by computers until a user allows it for a reason. I don't have a new computer, so I am still at risk, no matter how much technology changes. Active X was what allowed all the spyware and adware which almost took my entire computer down in the first place.
So I email her and ask what my other options are. She replied with a sentence telling me to check the syllabus, that there's an option there. WTF? Uh NO there isn't. It said to do the homework in the Lab "if you can". That is NOT an option. Not everyone has time to physically go somewhere to do their homework. I didn't sign up for a web component class for a reason - and I didn't sign up for a math with a required lab for a reason. I didn't reply to her.
I called the school to ask what I can do. I was thinking they would maybe make her use the damn book, but instead they gave me permission to switch my class! :yeehaw And, there was actually a class with the perfect hours/days for me that hadn't even started yet which made my switch instant. I got it done this morning. You have no idea what a relief that is!
I'm considering emailing the 1st professor's supervisor, but I don't want to sound all bitter, so I'm going to marinate on it for a few days.
