View Full Version : $205.89 later....
Christina 01-23-2008, 10:46 PM Ouch!!!!! I just purchased USED my Microbiology textbook and lab book and with tax they were $205.89!!! I just want to punch my friend in the head right now. Long story short, we both have the same registration priority and register the same time (based on the last 2 digits of our social security numbers) and she always uses the phone registration and i register online. Somehow she got right into Physiology and I didn't. So I registered for Microbiology since I still need that course. She got upset when I told her in Anatomy last semester that I didn't get in, since she didn't want to take the class alone. She then said I should take Physiology Spring of '08 since it goes hand in hand with Anatomy. So I said I would show up the first night (last night) and see if I could add.
I showed up and hahahaha. of the 40 people in the class, only 1 person didn't show up. There were 25 of us trying to add and the teacher was going to do a lottery and I said F that and left. She was pissed saying I didn't know if I would get in or not and I told her I didn't care, I was still feeling sick and would rather go home.
Plus after more thought, it makes more sense to do Microbiology this semester since it's a Friday evening and Saturday morning. If I did this in the Fall semester it wouldn't jive with my SIL's wedding plans, since being a bridesmaid I'll be going to the showers, bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, etc. And that's at least 4-6 classes I would miss and that would make me almost fail.
So since I didn't buy my Microbiology books two weeks ago on half.com (like I SHOULD have) I had to get them last minute at the bookstore, and in the process spend $120 more. Yikes.
I flipped through the books and groaned, there is a bunch of chemistry sorta stuff in there, eek!!! I did well in chemistry, but it wasn't one of my favorite subjects, so here's to passing in May! :)
'Reen 01-23-2008, 11:00 PM :hugehug hang in there sweetie... i feel you on the registration...it's a PAIN IN THE BUTT!!!!!
kahana23 01-23-2008, 11:12 PM omg seriously!! books are ridiculously expensive. my book cost 175 for ONE book as well. so stupid. good luck with your course. i hate science and am no good at it.
~Lil Mama~ 01-24-2008, 07:18 AM That's a lot of money for a book! The most expensive book I had to get was about $150 which was still pretty expensive in my opinion. Buying books just plain sucks!

:agree i totally agree!
Shannon 01-24-2008, 09:08 AM Because I took a year to study abroad, I seriously lucked out. All of the friends I made freshman year in my classes were going through the same classes a year ahead of me afterwards. So I just borrowed their books for the last three years of college. It saved me thousands of dollars. The down side is that some of them I would have liked to have kept and had copies of like some of my Signals and Systems books, Electronics and probably even my differential equations text. This stuff actually comes up. Physiology though - no way. I would have PAID for her to take it back. :D
noony626 01-24-2008, 09:10 AM wow I'm soooo sorry!! I can't believe they even sell books that much! that's ridiculous. Good luck in microbiology this semester!!!

That's awesome that you saved a lot of money being able to borrow the books from your friends when you studyied abroad!!! Usually I save a ton on my textbooks since I'll buy them on half.com or ebay.com or other places and save a bundle, but since I stupidly waited til the last minute assuming I'd get into Physiology I then had to buy my Microbiology books at the book store. I think these next two semesters are going to kill me with all this science since it isn't one of my strong subjects. I'll just have to study, study, study every day!! :)

It's ridiculous how much books are! The girl in front of me had six itty bitty books that added up to $340!!!!! I would have died! I just think it's BS that my Lab book which is a spiral bound paperback sort of book is $75.00 used!!!!! Ridiculous. Whoever invented the concept of needing to buy text books from distributors made a killing!

Ouch!! That's a lot for one book! Thank you so much. I'm scared about the next two semesters since they are my final two before I can apply to nursing schools and I HAVE to pass both classes with at least a B and that terrifies me since science has NEVER been my strong link:( I did well in Chemistry, but that was only because I had a really good study group, so I hope I click with people in my class and that there are people in there that I can study with since I've found that really helps.
StephanieM 05-05-2008, 09:44 PM Good luck! You'll do good!
Buying books sucks..
Brandi 05-05-2008, 09:46 PM I feeeeel your pain! Even when hubby was getting his tuition assistance which covered his actual classes, we were still paying SO much out of pocket for books. HUNDREDS of dollars for USED! :sick Ugh, it's terrible!
davey's_girl 05-05-2008, 10:00 PM I know books are outrageous! I hate that they are aways changing the edition and all that really changes is the cover art and a paragraph here and there but we have to buy the "New" edition and pay out the ass for it. I picked up the older editions for almost all my psych classes for $1 a piece at a local thrift shop. Luckily, there is one psych instructor at school who doesn't require the current edition and I've been able to take 4 classes to her so far without buying a book.

When I took Anatomy I got the previous edition for $10 on half.com since the new one was $175. With Microbiology the previous edition was only $20 cheaper then the new one, so I figured that it would be cheaper in the end to buy the used current edition at the bookstore, sucked though.
I'm taking Physiology this coming semester and I'm going to see if my friend who is taking it now wants to switch books since she has to take Microbiology next semester, that would save me a ton of $$$.

That would be great. I would definitely switch books if you can. I wish I had friends at college who were majoring in the same thing.
StephanieM 05-06-2008, 08:31 PM I always try to make connections I can switch books with..
What I hate is when your prof writes the books, so they constantly change editions so THEY can make more money.. as if we aren't paying enough for tuition!

This is the first time I've had someone I could swap books with. Normally Laura and I are in the same classes so we'll either get the old edition, or buy one book and share it. But this time around since we couldn't get into the same class, we'll be able to swap them out:)

Ugh, my friend ran into that problem! In her organic chemistry class the teacher wrote the book and it was constantly being revised. But at least it was only $35.00 each time since it was a spiral bound paper type of book. But it did add up really quickly.
Trish 05-07-2008, 04:35 PM Yeah that sucks. I'd put a flyer out at the end of the semester and sell it for $20 or so cheaper than the bookstore is selling it for. We had a board at our bookstore just for selling books. I loved it. Either way, I hope it works out for you.
