I swear, it seems every year that the community colleges, or more specifically Solano & Napa community colleges (and other big ones in the state), are changing their requirements for nursing school entrance. I’d heard in the past that the TEAS test was starting to become a requirement for community colleges, I just didn’t think it would hit Solano so soon. Napa implemented it last year, but did it in an illegal manner (in the middle of a semester and it wasn’t part of the mandated requirements or curriculum) and were sued by the students and the students won. However, it is now part of the requirements.
I was pulling up the requirements at Solano to see if anything had changed since all these rumors are flying around about what they are implementing. The secret score that they generate somehow from your overall college GPA, English GPA, core biology GPA (anatomy, physiology and microbiology) and core biology repetitions is how they come up with it someone, and before you had to get a 70 and now a 73, and I’ve heard that is making a big deal for some people. My overall college GPA is great, though my Solano one just went down since I forgot to drop my soccer class last semester and got an F and that just made my GPA plummet. So I’m taking a bunch of easy classes to boost it back up again, so hopefully that helps a tad.
But now, as of January this year they implemented the TEAS testing to where you HAVE to have it before they will consider you for placement on the waiting list and you HAVE to score at least a 68. I have no idea what that means since each school does it differently. I just know that this test is designed to test you in math, English, writing and science, but the more advanced stuff like the pre-req biology classes for nursing, higher levels of math, etc. I am not worried about the English and writing since I rock in those subjects, but frankly the math and biology terrify me, but the math more since I suck balls at math.
According to the people that developed the test, if students don’t do well on the test they assume that they will flunk out of nursing school and it’s used to see how you’ve retained what you’ve been taught. I can see the argument to both sides, but I think it is fucking bull shit they are mandating all these tests BEFORE you get into the damn program!!!!!! On top of the fact that the majority of these classes I haven’t taken recently except the biology pre-reqs so I will have to study my ass off. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
I called my husband just to vent a tad and he’s like “what are you tripping over when it’s not til next year?” I’m tripping since come the middle of December I’ll be done with all my pre-reqs and have to start cramming to then prepare myself since I want to apply to schools in January, and the longer you take to apply, the further out you’ll wait for placement into the program.
I know I shouldn’t stress over something that I can get study materials for, but I am freaking out. I did terrible on the pre SAT’s in high school since I’m horrid with math, but I did really good on the ACT. And I’ve heard this test is easier then both of those, but still I’m worried big time.
So now I’m having my sister get information from the community college in the county we grew up in, since they are a bit behind in implementing certain things, so if it comes down to it and I get in, I’ll go to Mendocino JC instead of Solano. Just would blow since my sister lives 100 miles from me, and it would mean living with her 5 days a week (not a problem), and only seeing Paul on the weekends, if that, but if it means me getting in and not having to kill myself over this test, then it’s worth it.
So we’ll see.
