View Full Version : How long is Kindergarten, usually?
Brandi 05-14-2008, 07:22 AM Is Kindergarten usually a full day or half day?
If I remember correctly, I think it was a full day back when I was in school. However, lately, I've heard many people say that their kids only go for a half day and that the Kindergarten classes are actually broken up into a morning class and afternoon class.
The Kindergarten down here that Jaxon will be going to is from 8am to 3:30 pm! :wow I think that seems like a LOOOONG day especially since this will be the first year in school for some of them. I bet Jaxon will be WORN OUT after a full day like that. He'll leave before 8 every morning and not get home until almost dinner time. That is insane!
But the Kindergarten here is so cool.... the cafeteria brings their food to their classroom, they have their own bathrooms and pretty much everything right there inside the class.
Amnicole2008 05-14-2008, 07:40 AM Here in INdiana it's supposed to be FULL DAY Kindergarten but at the school here in my town they have 2 full day classes and 1 half day. I think it's a law now that you ahve to have full day but at this school they still have the half day? So who knows.
AllyssaM 05-14-2008, 12:44 PM Kindergarten classes have always been half days, broken up into two classes, Morning and Afternoon. Most the the K areas out in the desert [where I'm from] had their own area at the Elementry school fenced off w/ their own restrooms & playground, ect. I Interned in a K-Class my Senior year of HS [06]. Best experience of my life. The classes are like 4 hours long. And if you have a good teacher, that's plenty of time. And you get all the requirements in. I think a full day of school is too long for 4/5 year olds. Especially if they never went to Pre-School or anything. They're attention spans aren't very long still, so you'd have to have a lot of fun things planned for a full day to keep them tuned in the whole time.
Let us know how Jaxon does though!
MynTop 05-14-2008, 12:47 PM Kaecee's first year of school was the year they decided to switch from half to full days! (I cried so much!) But she goes in at 8:55 and gets out at 3:45. It feels like super long but she got used to it quickly and she loves it. Next year it's off to Kindergarten for TJ and I get to go through it all over again!
ETA: At Kaecee's school they have "quiet time" after their afternoon recess where the teacher reads to them and they get to lay down with a blanket or towel (they bring them from home) and for the first few months Kaecee would fall asleep during this time. Now she stays up all day.
Brandi 05-14-2008, 01:25 PM I was just sitting here thinking about how I'll have to wean him off his naps :lol He normally takes at least an hour long nap each day, I can only imagine how exhausted he would be if he were doing 5 full days of school with no naps :nutts It's going to be SO good for him though. He will just love being busy all day. I don't think I keep him busy enough and he gets bored SOOOO easily. It will be nice for him to have the fully structured days with a lot of interaction with other children.
Shannon 05-14-2008, 03:12 PM I went to half-day kindergarten. It was like 8am to 11:30 or 12 or something.
Trish 05-14-2008, 05:04 PM My kids went to full day.
~*Amylynn*~ 05-14-2008, 05:12 PM I went to full day, but we had nap time...my best friends son goes to half day
Jer's school is all day and they take a nap after lunch( Im almost postive about that) for a bit but not sure how long. They go from 8:00-2:45 just like Jerron does now in pre-k.
When I went to Kindergarten I only went half day though we left after lunch.
storybooker 05-14-2008, 06:58 PM I went to K half days, our school districts have always had a morning class and an afternoon class. Just recently the state suggested full days and a lot of parents fought it. I think they're still trying to do it but another idea they've put through is to keep K as half days and also to help them transition better they have been thinking of changing first grade to something like 4 full days a week instead of 5.
Also, up until I was in 3rd grade, all schools only went half days on Thursdays. But they changed that to 5 full days when I went into 4th grade, now the school district I was in still goes 5 full days but the district I live in now started half days up again for all grades, it's on Wednesdays.
Marybeth 05-14-2008, 09:25 PM I went to 1/2 day kindergarten, but Quinn went to full day k. He adjusted very quickly, I thought it would be much harder than it was.
lady blu 05-15-2008, 01:32 AM my daughter took the afternoon shift, it worked better for me since i was working @ the time, but yea its usually half days, here in tx you have to qualify to send your k-kid full day.
Shaunny 05-15-2008, 12:59 PM *waves* HiBrandi(yeah i've been hiding ) anyways, i am trying to get JJ in up here at the public school right outside the base(we are Andrews AFB,Md) Though Iam not sur if i want to have him in private this year cause of the things ihave heard in regards to this school being the former Military school for the base an the way the teachers are in regards to the Military families and their children.
For me Kindergarden was half days. ,... here they are on the bus at 7:24 am and are at school from 7:45 a to 1:55 pm . So who knows what iam gonig to do.....
Trish 05-16-2008, 01:41 AM P.S. Kaitlyn even went to full-day Pre-K. That was at the same school as her K class.
