View Full Version : Which would you do?

We're starting to think about the beginning stages of planning our PCS move back to San Diego. We've gotten word that we'll be leaving sometime around the beginning of November, which is only 5 months or so away, and this trip is going to take quite a bit of planning :insomnia

We'll be traveling with 4 kids (ages 6, 3, 2 and newborn) and there are a few different scenarios I am thinking through. I have no idea which one would be best when you factor in stress, money, etc. So, tell me what you think you would do.

Flying -

If we fly, it's going to cost around $200-$250 per ticket. So, we're looking at a flight cost of around $1500 or so when you factor in tickets, fees, taxes, any extra luggage (we will have to bring carry ons, bags, a stroller PLUS four huge britax carseats). We'd also have to make arrangements to fly Yogi (around $300-$400), plus we'd have to factor in the cost to ship the van which is about $1,000 maybe more with gas prices the way they are now, plus the cost of a rental car for a few days. So, we'd probably be looking at around $3,000 or so to fly with all costs factored in.

We've done the flying thing with three kiddos and it was seriously one of the most stressful days of my life. It didn't help that two kids had fevers, one was colicky, the rental car people at our arriving airport were running more than 2 hours late and none of us had eaten anything for about 8 hours. But seriously, it was pretty much hell trying to juggle three kids, plus baggage, plus the carseats.

The plus side is that it was only one day of travel, then it was over with. So, we didn't have all of the driving, eating out, hotel stays, multiple days of sun up to sun down driving, etc to worry about. Plus, I think we ended up spending the same amount of money to fly as we did to drive b/c we didn't have things like gas, eating out every day, hotel stays, etc to pay for.

Driving-

We've also done the driving thing with three kids and a dog. It was pretty much hell also :lol It's a 2,200+ mile trip, so it was 3 FULL days of getting up before the sun was up and driving until we were all about to die from being in the car. The kids were cranky, the van was believably cramped just with the three carseats, the dog and the luggage we had. I don't even know how we'd work it with a forth carseat thrown into the mix. :insomnia

It ended up costing us a fortune b/c the hotels that accepted pets Yogi's size were few and far between, they were crappy run down pieces of junk and they were expensive ($100+ per night). Plus, eating out three times a day for a family of 5, gas, etc, etc. We spent around $700+ just on gas last time, this was with gas like a dollar cheaper per gallon than it is now. So, we're looking at probably $900+ for gas and such. Then another $100-$125 per night for a hotel for 4 nights. Plus, another $100 a day in misc eating and other crap. Two tune ups and oil changes for the van (before and after) which is another $100. With all extras factored in, we're looking at probably $2,500 or so to drive.

The plus side to this was that we didn't have to worry about running through airports juggling luggage and kids, we weren't rushed, we could stop and go as we pleased, we didn't have to worry about being the focal point of a plane full of people with the kids crying and being antsy :lol and no rental cars or anything like that to worry with.

RV -

This is something that we've never done but I've been thinking about doing so I finally called to verify prices for renting a large (28 foot I think, sleeps up to 8 people) RV for a one way trip. Since we'd be dropping off instead of doing a round trip, they automatically tack on a $1500 "Drop off" fee. So, that's $1,500 off the bat which is where the bulk of the cost is, IMO. Then it's $91 per day and 32 cents per mile. If we did the trip in 3 days, our total cost would be about $2,500 plus the cost of food to bring with us and gas.

The plus side is that we could tow our van and not have to worry about a rental car, we wouldn't have to worry about hotels to accommodate dogs, we could drive and stop when ever we want to, rather than planning around which hotels I"ve booked that will let Yogi stay there, the kids can have free access to stretch and move around, easier to feed the baby whenever he needs to eat, we can buy regular food at the grocery store to cook and eat in the RV without eating fast food the whole way and we'll have a lot more room to bring the carseats and luggage that we'll need.

So, all of our options obviously have a few sucky parts and a good good parts, but they will all cost around the same amount of money, give or take a few hundred bucks.

Which would you do if you were in my shoes?

well for me personally if I were you I would go with the least expensive and less stress way which sounds like to me would be the RV way. I never ever thought of doing it that way. But our problem would be that we have 2 vehicles which I seriously doubt we could tow both of them. so it would probably cost something to have one of our vehicles shipped.

You have to figure that your time and comfort are worth some amount of money. So driving in your van is knocked off right away for me.

Flying sounds incredibly stressful. I think that the RV, while it will take a lot of time, would be fun and no uncomfortable. Jaxon and Shelby are definitely old enough that this PCS will be remembered and I think in an RV it would be more of a fun vacation time memory than a stressful horrible trip back to San Diego.

Good luck deciding!

Either the RV or train!! Train is my first pick, it moves even while you sleep, you have your own little cabin to sleep in, you can move around with making rushed annoying rest stops, and you can even eat while the train is moving..... Train tickets are fairly inexpensive and it's a super fun way to travel! Only worry is getting your vehicle up there.

I hadn't even thought of a train. How do you go about looking something like that up? Is there a specific company that runs them or should I just google trains? :lol

If you have an Amtrak train station around you that might work. They should be able to handle Yogi too. And I think they may even be able to ship your car too. Hmmm that just gave me an idea too. There is an Amtrak Station in Newport News. Might have to talk to my DH about doing that too so we dont have to drive both Vehicles to VA.

well I just talked to my hubby about us possibly doing a train and he said it would take a week for us to get from Texas to VA because there would be no direct route. We would have to go to chicago and then to PA and then to VA or something along those line. But it might cost a bit extra for them to carry your car. I was so hoping that would be something we could do though because I dont like the idea that we have to drive both cars.

But it might work better for you all since you only have 1 vehicle. I dont know which train company it would be either and how long it would take you guys to get there either. I might even cost the same thing as driving

Hey I just got my hubby to look up how much it would cost you all to go by train and with a military discount it would be around 882 or 900.00 But the Dog would have to go in as luggage and you would have to ship your vehicle separately. But it still might be cheaper. But the only thing is there are no direct routes. You would have to go from New Orleans to Chicago and then from Chicago to Los Angeles and then to SD.

Oh yeah, train is my vote! We used to take the train everywhere in Europe and we loved it!!

Well the train wont work for us because there is no auto train that could carry our cars. So we are still stuck driving. I just hope it will work out for Brandi so its less hassle than having to fly. I dont think I would want to fly with 4 kids and 1 Dog.

I think either the RV idea or train idea would be good for them though. Driving would be a royal pain too. We only have 1 child but I really dread having to drive both cars and there is no way on earth our Jeep could tow my car either.

Yep! When I said train, I meant train would be Brandis best bet! IMO

yep even if they have to pay to ship their vehicle separately it would still be alot cheaper.

After looking at all options and seeing that one isn't really cheaper then the other, I think it would be the best idea to use the RV. You'd have more comfort then just driving in the van, would be able to save on money since as you said you could buy the groceries and cook them in the RV, not to mention the kids could have plenty of stretch/running around room. And I bet there might even be a TV with a VCR or DVD player so the kids could be entertained.

LOL

oh I am just thinking about what I would do if I were in her shoes. But since I am not in her shoes she has to decide what the most feasible way is and one that wont cause alot of stress too. We cant spend their money for them. LOL But then again she did ask for our opinions. I still think I would do either the RV only because I dont know how she would feel about having to change trains with 4 kids and a dog either. At least the RV they can just stop at a place that they can hook up to and take their own food and have a place to sleep without the cost of hotels and if they tow their vehicle then they wouldnt have to worry about paying to ship it either. Even if the RV way is gonna cost a little more than maybe taking the train I think I would much rather take an RV. If it was just one child then the train might not be a bad idea.

I am sure they will make the right decision for their family. But its still nice to get other peoples input.

As opposed to leaving them in LA? Is that an option? :rofl

I'm going to say, flying. It sucks but it will be over fast. I like the quick and painful route the most.

We're looking into flying b/c it looks like we might be able to get tickets for less than $200 each! On top of that, I MIGHT be able to get my mom to drive our van with Yogi. IN that case, we could make the move for dirt cheap. So, we'll see how it pans out. I appreciate all of the info SO much though. I actually went and looked up the trains and it looks like a lot of fun, actually. I don't think we'll do the trains for the move but now I'm interested in maybe doing a train ride for something else. I've never been on one.

I think the RV sounds like an excellent idea.
